STLA Charitable Giving
Southern Trial Lawyers does more than sponsor one of the nation's best seminars each year at Mardi Gras. Each year our President is allowed to nominate the recipient of a $5,000.00 charitable gift, to fulfill the philanthropic purposes of STLA. In 2002, President Larry Friedman chose to donate the $5,000.00 gift to Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Miami and the Transplant Foundation. In 2001, $5000.00 was distributed by President Bruce Rasmussen to the Legal Aide Society for Farm Workers, Shelter for Health and Emergency for Abused Women and the Pro Bono Group for Children. In 2000, the $5,000.00 was given to Birmingham PATH, an organization in Birmingham, Alabama, that furnishes transitional housing for homeless women and children. In 1999, STLA donated $5,000.00 to Southern Poverty Law Center, headed by Morris Dees in Montgomery Alabama. Southern Poverty Law Center has for years fought racism and bigotry throughout the nation, and is known for its “Klan Watch” program and litigation against the Ku Klux Klan.
In 2005 the Southern Trial Lawyers Board of Directors voted unanimously to raise the Presidents donation from $5,000 to $10,000. In 2005 President Fayrell Furr Jr. made his donation to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and Clothe the People, an organization started in Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina. In 2006 President Howard Spiva made his donation to The American Diabetes Association. 2007 President Gary Green made his donation to MADD.
