President's Donation 2017

DeKalb PATH Academy students with a $20,000 check from STLA

Each year, the STLA president chooses a charity to support and in 2017 Mark Zamora selected DeKalb PATH Academy Charter School in Georgia. PATH stands for Perseverance, Accomplishment, Triumph, and Honor. The mission of PATH Academy is to create a safe and nurturing learning environment in which refugee, immigrant, and local children can develop the knowledge, skills, and character needed to succeed in top-quality high schools, colleges, and the competitive world beyond regardless of their socio-economic and linguistic barriers. Mark said of the contribution, “Volunteering at PATH has changed my life over the past seven years. This donation means so much to them and many tears were shed when they learned of it.”

PATH Academy holds fast to its belief that all children regardless of economic and linguistic background can achieve their full potential as productive, knowledgeable, responsible, and caring individuals if they are given a chance to learn in a school that provides and demands academic excellence and personal responsibilities. PATH is a public charter school that has underserved first-generation immigrants from Central and South American Countries, as well as Africans. Even though 100% of the students live below the poverty line and face many challenges, PATH is one of the top performing middle schools in Georgia, and in terms of testing, are the top 1%.
